Malbec Partners Continues to Expand Alternative Asset Management Platform
Veteran Trader Joins Emerging Markets Team
NEW YORK, May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Malbec Partners, Inc., an institutional alternative asset management platform, announced today that Costas Hamakiotes has joined their emerging markets team as Senior Trader. Mr. Hamakiotes joins Portfolio Manager Bill Geisler and Senior Research Analyst Lars Pedersen and will report to Mr. Geisler.
"We are delighted that Costas has joined us. Costas, Bill, and Lars all successfully collaborated together for six years at Lehman and two years at CSFB. They have been tested during the most stressful periods for emerging markets, and we are excited to have such an experienced team reunited here at Malbec Partners," said Jeff Trongone, President and CEO. Each member of the team has at least 19 years of experience in emerging markets.
"Malbec's focus on risk management was an important factor in my decision to join the firm as was the opportunity to rejoin my highly esteemed long-time colleagues," said Mr. Hamakiotes. "Bill and I look forward to incorporating more relative-value trading opportunities into the emerging markets strategy. The emerging markets continue to offer exceptional investment opportunities, and I am delighted to join Malbec."
Since its launch in 2007, Malbec has built out two strategies. In addition to an emerging markets team, Malbec has assembled a veteran process-driven multi-strategy team drawing from the ranks of Citadel, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs. Malbec plans to add more strategies over the coming periods. "In the midst of these difficult markets, we are seeing a significant number of experienced teams that are attracted to our platform and disciplined approach to the business. Flows from institutional investors to alternative investment strategies are picking up, and Malbec is well positioned for growth as investors seek talented investment teams, a significant risk management program, and institutional quality business operations," said Mr. Trongone.
Mr. Hamakiotes has 19 years of experience investing in emerging markets. He joins Malbec Partners from Global Securities Advisors ("GSA"), an investment advisor that he co-founded and managed for six years which specialized in managing emerging markets fixed income relative value strategies. Prior to GSA, Costas spent over six years at Lehman Brothers, from 1996 to 2003, where his accomplishments included building a cutting-edge real-time analytics platform and then heading the firm's emerging market relative-value proprietary trading desk. During that same time period Mr. Geisler served as Lehman's Global Head of Emerging Markets while Mr. Pedersen held the title of Chief Strategist for Lehman's Hedge Fund Coverage Group. Prior to Lehman, Costas spent two years at CSFB building trading models and the framework for its proprietary book.
Mr. Hamakiotes began his career at Salomon Brothers in 1990, where he spent five years developing the Salomon Brothers Brady Bond Index and starting the firm's emerging markets Eurobond trading desk. Mr. Hamakiotes is also a published writer and contributed two chapters on investing in emerging fixed income markets to legendary bond investor Frank Fabozzi's book "Investing in Emerging Fixed Income Markets." Mr. Hamakiotes holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from U.C. Berkeley, as well as a M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, also from U.C. Berkeley.
