ACS Awards Six Winners for Life College Scholarships

Corporate Scholarship Program Expanded to Include Children of Military Families

LEXINGTON, Ky. Dec. 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In an effort to make college more affordable, Affiliated Computer Services, Inc. (NYSE: ACS) today awarded scholarships to six Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) students. Each student will receive $1,000 per semester, with a maximum total award of $4,000, based on students maintaining good academic standing.

"My will and my determination have gotten me this far," said scholarship recipient Daniela Hodges. "With ACS' support, nothing will stop me now."

The scholarships are funded through ACS' partnership with The Winners for Life Foundation. The ACS Philanthropic Foundation, Inc. furthers education outreach in the communities where its employees live and work. The Foundation provides programs that address the needs and advancement of education and technology enrichment to students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to continue their education. Educational programs currently supported include Winners for Life, World of Work, and Readers are Leaders.

"These scholarships help the foundation fulfill one of its goals of rewarding students who are motivated to succeed, but might not have the resources to make it happen," said Lora Villarreal, president and chair of the ACS Philanthropic Foundation, and executive vice president and chief people officer of ACS.

ACS, along with the support and generosity of senior leaders, is also expanding its scholarship program to include children of military families. Additional future scholarships will be added and dedicated exclusively to children in military families. These new scholarships will follow the same criteria as Winners for Life, but will only go to children of active or retired military members. Deadlines and the application process have not been finalized yet.

"These scholarships are another example of ACS' commitment to the communities where we do business," said Ann Vezina, executive vice president and group president of ACS Commercial Solutions. "We know if we are to be successful we need to have a skilled workforce. That starts with an education."

ACS partnered with Bluegrass Community and Technical College to identify students with a financial need, believing they wouldn't otherwise have a chance to attend college. A BCTC scholarship committee selected the recipients. The Winners for Life Foundation believes that students who truly desire to attend college should have that opportunity regardless of their financial means.

"The Winners for Life Foundation is excited for more students across the United States to attend college due to our scholarship program," said Donny Anderson, founder of the foundation. "We know the students in Lexington are deserving of the funds and will do their best to accomplish their goal of a college education."

Those receiving scholarships today were:

  • Ashley Adams, Lexington
  • Bethany Coleman, Danville
  • Stefanie Evans, Versailles
  • Daniela Hodges, Nicholasville
  • Anessia Nutter, Lexington
  • Alaa Thabateh, Lexington

"Bluegrass Community and Technical College is pleased to partner with ACS to bring the Winners for Life program to Lexington," said Dr. Augusta A. Julian, president of Bluegrass Community and Technical College. "Community partnerships like this help our students to have the support they need to reach their goals and be a success in life. We so appreciate ACS for making these scholarships possible."
