Aerojet, BAES and U.S. Navy Celebrate NULKA Anti-Missile Decoy System Milestone
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Aerojet, a GenCorp
(NYSE: GY) company, announced today that the Nulka Active Missile Decoy
System, which uses Aerojet's solid rocket motor, has reached the 100th
installation milestone on a U.S. Navy ship.
For this achievement, the Nulka system received the honor of 'Defence
Project of the Year' in the Major Product category, by the Australian Defence
Magazine (ADM). The ADM annual defense industry award recognizes Australia's
Defence Materiel Organization (DMO) and its industry team of suppliers for
demonstrating innovation in planning, execution efficiency, results delivery
and overall project management approach.
In research, development and production for 20 years, the Nulka Active
Missile Decoy is designed and integrated by BAE Systems Australia. The system
is a rocket-propelled active decoy designed to lure anti-ship missiles away
from intended targets. Aerojet's Orange, Va. facility manufactures the
fully-compliant insensitive munition solid rocket motor for the system and has
delivered 700 rocket motors under this contract. Aerojet is also a world class
supplier of propulsion systems for the U.S. Navy, including the Standard
Missile and Tactical Tomahawk motors and the Coyote Supersonic Target ramjet
engine.
To date, approximately 500 Nulka decoys have been produced for the Royal
Australian, U.S. and Canadian navies and deployed on nearly 120 surface
combatants. Application to U.S. Navy ships is managed by NAVSEA with support
from branches of the Navy Surface Warfare Center and the Naval Research
Laboratory.
The threat to commercial and military shipping presented by sea-skimming
missiles has been validated. "Nulka is a weapon with the full capability to
defeat this threat," said Aerojet Program Manager, Richard Brown. "To meet
this mission, the solid rocket motor has the tightest ballistics performance
standard of any motor in the active inventory. Our Aerojet team has achieved
100 percent qualification success rate through seven years of production
history."
