Annual event benefits needy children in communities throughout the nation and highlights the importance of reading to children of all ages
ANN ARBOR, Mich., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Beginning Nov. 15, Borders and
Waldenbooks will conduct a company-wide, community-based book drive that will
benefit children in need and provide them with educational, entertaining and
enriching gifts this holiday season. During the month-long Winter Book Drive,
staff at nearly 1,000 Borders and Waldenbooks stores will encourage customers
to purchase new books and gifts, which will be donated directly to a local
charity designated by each store.
"Our store managers and booksellers really get behind the book drive and
take a lot of pride in selecting organizations that resonate in their
communities. They rally their customers around helping their local charities
and motivate them to share the spirit of the holidays by donating books and
other gifts," said Rob Gruen, executive vice president of Merchandising and
Marketing.
Hundreds of non-profit organizations across the country will benefit from
the month-long book drive, which concludes Dec. 13. Recipients will include
organizations such as: Toys for Tots in New Jersey, ReadBoston, Northwest
Montana Head Start, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Rady Children's
Hospital in San Diego and Madison Family Literacy Program in Wisconsin.
Whether searching for a beloved classic from their childhood or
discovering a new favorite author or illustrator, customers will enjoy
browsing Borders and Waldenbooks stores' selection of thousands of titles. The
retailer expects some of the most popular books donated to include perennial
favorites "Goodnight Moon" and the Harry Potter series; holiday-themed titles
"Chaucer's First Winter" and "Reindeer Christmas," and current best-sellers
such as Jamie Lee Curtis' "Big Words for Little People;" "If You Give a Cat a
Cupcake," by Laura Numeroff and Kate DiCamillo'sNewbery Medal-winner "The
Tale of Despereaux."
"Our extremely generous customers share our company's belief that every
child should experience the joy of owning their own book and discovering new
worlds through their imagination. We thank them for their enthusiastic support
of this community-based effort and their commitment to promoting literacy,"
said Gruen.
