Local Restaurateur to Anchor Redeveloped Atherton Mill

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- One of Charlotte's most successful and well-known restaurant owners is expanding his presence in South End with a new restaurant concept at Atherton Mill. John Duncan, who owns Bonterra and Las Ramblas and co-founded Mac's Speed Shop, will open Icehouse at South End in early 2010. The restaurant will occupy 5,600 square feet and feature an impressive 200 different beers, signature burgers, barbecue, ribs, and wood-oven pizzas among other menu items.

Icehouse at South End is part of the redevelopment and remerchandising ongoing at Atherton Mill. Representatives from Edens & Avant, owner of the property, have worked with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission to design changes that are in keeping with the historic nature of Atherton Mill. For the redevelopment project, the Company is focused on features that will engage and connect people from the neighborhood. More dining options, new retail and major improvements to the outdoor space to enable events are some of the changes nearby residents can expect in the future.

"With its beautiful architecture, rich history, and location along the light rail, Atherton Mill is a crucial part of the South End story," commented Lyle Darnall, Edens & Avant Managing Director. "Bringing in a premier restaurant operator has been our focus since we purchased the property and began planning the redevelopment. Not only is Icehouse a significant addition to the Charlotte restaurant scene, it's an exciting preview to other improvements you will see here in the coming months."

Icehouse will be the perfect destination for enjoying a game, spending a night out with friends, or having lunch with the family. The decor will feature exposed beams and dark woods to create a rustic feel, while blue back-lighting will add to the Icehouse atmosphere.

"South End has an eclectic mix of restaurants, retail and entertainment, and Atherton Mill is the signature location within the area," commented Duncan. "I have always been drawn to the character of this location and look forward to being a vital part of the neighborhood when we open."

Dan Boone, long-time employee and chef for Duncan, is designing the menu for the restaurant, which also will include extensive catering options. With big screen televisions throughout the space, Duncan envisions some sections of the restaurant devoted to different teams on college game days, and the restaurant will be an obvious choice when the Panthers are playing at home or away.
