Mock Crash to Help Law Enforcement Investigate Rail/Highway Collisions

LOUISVILLE, Ky., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A mock collision between a train and a motor vehicle will be the setting for a Grade Crossing Collision Investigation class for Kentucky law enforcement officers in Louisville at 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 24.

The mock crash will be part of a four-day training session held by Norfolk Southern Railway Police Department under the authority of the Kentucky Department of Criminal Justice Training Sept. 22-25. A Norfolk Southern locomotive and a vehicle donated by State Farm Insurance will be positioned at Norfolk Southern's K Yard at 4200 Gibson Lane in Louisville. There will be no actual impact between the locomotive and the vehicle.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians will respond to extricate and treat staged actors, provided by the Kentucky office of Operation Lifesaver, in or around the crash. Law enforcement officers will then use the vehicle, train and witnesses to obtain all information needed to complete a crash report.

Operation Lifesaver, www.oli.org, is a nationwide public education program to promote public awareness of the highway-rail crossing environment and to encourage compliance with the traffic laws relating to crossing signs and signals and trespassing. Operation Lifesaver state coordinators are available to make presentations to community groups, school children, bus and truck drivers and others who live or travel near train tracks to offer safety tips. To schedule a presentation, contact Kentucky Operation Lifesaver, www.kyol.org.
