YouSendIt Calculator Shows the Trees You Save When You Prune Hard-Copy Deliveries

YouSendIt Earth Day Challenge seeks promises to substitute digital file delivery for printing, CD burning and shipping

CAMPBELL, Calif., April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In today's offices, we can find environmental heroes on every floor who shun stocking their printers, burning CDs and calling courier trucks for online digital file delivery. This swarm of green conscious worker bees is expanding daily; and to reward their earth-saving efforts, YouSendIt today launched the YouSendIt Earth Day Challenge.

The challenge asks users to visit http://news.yousendit.com/servlet/website/ResponseForm?NlpE.26Hkmo_.40hkt_zmHgKHshgL and make an Earth Day pledge to reduce the number of pages they will print, shipments they will send by courier, and CDs and DVDs they will burn. In 2008 alone, more than 40 million files were sent via YouSendIt, greatly reducing the need for files to be printed and/or burned onto a CD/DVD and sent through the mail. The company is looking for users to help exceed that figure this year through the Challenge.

Each pledge enters users in the challenge and qualifies them for the opportunity to win these environmentally friendly prizes:

  • A $359 Amazon Kindle Wireless Reading Device (Saving trees),
  • tickets to Disney's new movie, Earth (Learning about the planet we call home),
  • or one of five $100 Amazon gift cards (Reducing carbon emissions)

On the Earth Day Challenge site, when YouSendIt users enter the number of pages they promise not to print during one month, the quantity of media disks they will not use in that period and the courier mileage to be saved as a result, an online YouSendIt calculator immediately displays:

  • The number of trees saved
  • The total carbon emissions saved
  • The number of BTUs of energy saved
  • The number of gallons of fresh water that will NOT be consumed during paper production

The calculator also shows the material costs (paper, CDs, packaging, etc.) saved and the shipping costs avoided. YouSendIt hopes the challenge brings attention to the overuse of paper materials and its harm on the environment, considering one ton of paper (roughly 400 reams) destroys 24 trees, consumes 40,000 gallons of clean water for production processes, while emitting 5,690 pounds of greenhouse gasses and nearly 20,000 gallons of wastewater.*

"Not only do we pride ourselves on being a cost effective application to millions of users, but we are equally proud that YouSendIt can play a small role in helping conserve our planet's resources by helping our customers decrease paper use, as well as CDs and DVDs," said Ivan Koon, YouSendIt CEO. "As a Bay Area Green Business, YouSendIt firmly believes in sustainable business operations to decrease our daily impact on the environment, and we're hoping this contest in a small way encourages more environmentally friendly business practices."

Anyone can enter the Earth Day Challenge. The prize drawing will be held on May 1, 2009, and winners will be notified via email. For official contest rules, go to http://news.yousendit.com/servlet/website/ResponseForm?NlpE.26Hkmo_.40hkt_yLMLkLgJLl.
