The Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit in Chicago features real-time, actionable data for maximum energy efficiency
SAN BRUNO, Calif. and REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Greenbox Technology, creators of energy management software for the home, and smart grid infrastructure experts Silver Spring Networks announced today that their technology is being showcased as part of the Smart Home: Green + Wired, Powered by ComEd exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.
The newly redesigned Smart Home exhibit--which runs through Jan. 3, 2010 after welcoming more than 100,000 guests in 2008--takes guests on a guided tour of a 2,500-square-foot, fully functioning eco-friendly home. Guests can see firsthand all the ways a home can be built green, run sustainably and connected to the smart grid. The home features the latest innovations in reusable resources and eco-friendly landscaping, along with the newest innovations in smart home energy consumption powered by Greenbox and Silver Spring Networks.
Smart energy technologies incorporated throughout the home demonstrate how easy it is to use real-time energy consumption data to inspire lifestyle choices that save resources and eliminate waste without sacrificing comfort. The Greenbox user-interface will track and display electricity consumption in the home on a real-time basis and compare it with the on-site energy production of solar and wind power.
Silver Spring Networks' open, IP-based Smart Energy Network allows for the secure and reliable transmission of the data that powers Greenbox's advanced energy management systems. Greenbox enables utilities to share with consumers the real-time price for electricity as it varies throughout the day, a significant step for next-generation utilities.
"We're pleased to be a part of this exhibit, because it puts the software we've created into context and shows how it can be used day to day," said Jonathan Gay, founder and chief technology officer of Greenbox Technology. "We are working with utilities and smart-thermostat manufacturers to get this technology into the hands of energy consumers as quickly as possible."
The Greenbox web-based platform interfaces with utilities and smart-device manufacturers over solutions such as the Silver Spring Networks' Smart Energy Network to arm consumers with the knowledge they need to save money, improve the performance of their home heating and cooling systems, eliminate waste and -- ultimately -- reduce their carbon footprint.
"We're pleased to participate in Smart Home: Green + Wired for the second year, providing the infrastructure that makes two-way communication between consumers and utility companies possible," said John O'Farrell, executive vice president, Silver Spring Networks. "We hope this exhibit will help guests understand how technology is enabling them to play an active role in reducing energy consumption, lowering their bills and cutting carbon emissions."
Smart Home: Green + Wired, proudly sponsored by ComEd, Dominick's and the Motorola Foundation, runs March 19, 2009 through Jan. 3, 2010. Guided tour times vary. Visit www.msichicago.org for more information and to purchase tickets.
