Services
T-Mobile today consolidates its position as a key innovator in the mobile
data market with a series of announcements underlining its commitment to
delivering the best services, devices and network for its customers around
the world.
"2008 was a very strong year for T-Mobile. By the end of the year, our
data traffic had tripled and our web'n'walk subscriber base grew 53 per cent
to 5.9 million. 2009 is shaping up to be a similar success, with a very
strong innovation pipeline from our product and network teams and our
partners," comments Hamid Akhavan, CEO T-Mobile International. "Ongoing
trials of next-generation mobile network technology and the launch of the
best devices with the most innovative services such as the new web'n'walk
widget platform will continue to keep T-Mobile as the premier provider for
the mobile Internet."
Services
The latest version of web'n'walk, T-Mobile's popular mobile Internet
service platform, is announced today and will be available in Q1 2009 making
it easy for consumers to access their favorite web services with 'widgets';
small, accessible web applications such as Facebook, that reside on the
handset's home screen. With the new web'n'walk platform, widgets from many of
the world's best web brands, developed on open Internet standards, are
available to T-Mobile users on a range of additional handsets.
Marketplace
T-Mobile and Nokia are announcing a collaboration to open up an
integrated marketplace for mobile content and Internet services. Through
T-Mobile's web'n'walk widget platform, customers will be able to access both
T-Mobile's widget gallery and Nokia's Ovi Store directly from the idle screen
of their mobile phone. The integrated marketplace will be launching on mass
market Nokia Series 40 platform based phones in the second half of 2009.
Handsets
T-Mobile has seen great success in the last 12 months from its delivery
of the Apple iPhone 3G and the T-Mobile G1 with Google in multiple markets.
It continues to build on these successes with the launch of the T-Mobile MDA
Compact V and T-Mobile MDA Vario V, both of which will be avail-able by June
2009. These devices bring the latest touchscreen capabilities and new
web'n'walk services to its customer base.
T-Mobile is also announcing the exclusive LG GT 500 a slim touchscreen
phone suited to the mobile Internet age, with high speed connectivity, a five
megapixel camera with geo-tagging feature, email support and a three inch
screen. Additionally T-Mobile and Samsung will continue their strategic
partnership in 2009. The first of these devices will be Samsung's full touch
hero handset, the S8300, followed by strategic mass market devices, the S7350
and S6700. Further initiatives from this partnership will be announced at a
later stage.
Also announced today, the T-Mobile Vairy Touch makes touchscreen
technology much more accessible, and the new Nokia 1662 brings exclusive
design to its prepaid offering.
During the course of 2009, T-Mobile will continue to launch Android-based
devices. Amongst others, one of our development partners will be Huawei.
Mini-notebooks
T-Mobile has helped build and drive the mini-notebook market in Europe.
Its EUR1 mini-notebook offering(1) has been very popular in all the markets
it is active in. Today, T-Mobile is launching a new exclusive product: the HP
Compaq Mini 700, which will be available in the first half of 2009. This
device combines style and elegance with performance and will be a very
desirable premium addition to T-Mobile's mobile Internet offering.
Network technology
T-Mobile is inviting visitors to its Marquee at Mobile World Congress to
experience a demonstration of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology as it
continues to invest in its Next Generation Mobile Network. Over a connection
between Germany and Barcelona, visitors will see LTE being used in a mobile
environment demonstrating high definition video calling, online gaming and
lightning-fast downloads whilst on the move.
